MULI - Bamboo

This song is for all my friends - those who are still around and those whom I have lost touch with. Bamboo's song Muli definitely highlights the importance of friendship and camaraderie, and being able to appreciate and love the people who touched our lives one way or the other.

The last part of the song says it all. To all my friends, this is my humble way of expressing my love and gratitude for everything we have shared.

MOST BEAUTIFUL HEART

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley.

A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said, "Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine." The crowd and the young man looked at the old man's heart. It was beating strongly, but full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn't fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing.

The people stared ­ "How can he say his heart is more beautiful?" they thought.
The young man looked at the old man's heart and saw its state and laughed. "You must be joking," he said. "Compare your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears."

"Yes," said the old man, "Yours is perfect looking but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love - I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren't exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared."

"Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn't returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the empty gouges - giving love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty is?"

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks.

He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man's heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges.

The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his.

They embraced and walked away side by side.

FRIENDS OR LOVERS

"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."

Is it really hard to fall in love with a friend? I know a lot of people are asking themselves this question. Friendship, for me, forms a bond between two people that is as strong as love. When you become comfortable being with someone, or sharing your deepest thoughts with that person, a connection is formed. For me, the only difference is that love involves romance and intimacy that friends will never share.

When the connection is formed, sometimes people confuse it for love. Sometimes, it really is love. Things become difficult though when one falls in love, but the other person can only offer friendship. And sadly, most people do not take rejection lightly, to the point that when love cannot exist, the friendship is also lost.

We tend to forget how hard it is to find a true friend these days, that we would rather lose that person totally rather than appreciate what the other person can offer.

It may be very hard to still be friends with someone you love, especially if that person cannot love you back. And if still hurts, we really cannot force ourselves to bring back the friendship. In time, though, we may realize that the bond we shared with that person is something special, something that only the two of you can ever have. Eventually, after all the pain and bitterness is gone, we can look back, be thankful, and appreciate the fact that we have found a true friend, and hope that the friendship can still exist.

A Tribute To Life And to Love

Our world is governed by the concept of duality - light and dark, black and white, good and eveil, life and death. Death is uncertain, but people will die, we will all die, we just do not know when or how.

Recently, a good friend of mine lost someone very close to her heart. This made me realize a lot of things about life and love.

While we are still alive, we should always be appreciative of our blessings. We should celebrate each day that we open our eyes and say hello to a new day. We should make sure that we have lived each moment of our lives to the fullest and grab each opportunity to love and be loved.

If you love someone, tell them and don't let that chance pass you by... because when the time comes that you feel you are ready to show that person how much you love them... it just might be a little too late.

The Greatest Game of Risk

Everybody gets excited when presented a chance to gamble. It really feels great to win large sums of money just by being brave enough to take the chance - to be ready to win or lose.

Being in love is the greatest gamble we can ever play. The stakes are high - we can either be happy or miserable for the rest of our lives. And is it really a risk worth taking?

I would like to quote a line from one of my favorite movies: The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. True enough, being in love allows us to learn and feel a lot of things. If we have not been in love at least once in our lives, then we have not lived our lives to the fullest.

The chance to love and be loved is definitely a risk worth taking. The question that we need to ask ourselves now is: are we ready to make the greatest gamble of our life?

It is easy to be ready to win and be loved in return, but are we also ready to lose? Are we ready for rejection, are we ready to share our lives with someone else? Loving someone and taking the plunge is a big decision, and we cannot force ourselves to be ready if we are not. Once we feel we are ready, then all we have to do is go with the flow and be happy with whatever happens.

Is He the One?

At one point in our life, we will meet someone that will always be special. He (or she) is the person that knows who you really are - the person who accepts your weaknesses, and reaffirms your strengths. He is the one who can make you laugh effortlessly, who knows how to make you feel better after a bad day at work, or after a lost battle. He is the one who brought a whole new color to your life; he is the answer to your prayers, he is God's gift. But what would you do if that person turns out to be the one who will also hurt you the most?

Even though we think or we feel we love someone more than we love ourselves, we should also remember to love ourselves first. It may sound selfish, but if you do not love yourself that much, how would you expect others to feel that way towards you? If you can't appreciate your blessings, and if you keep on forgetting how happy it is to be alive, then you will just be unfair to other people for expecting that they can compensate for what you cannot give yourself.

Sometimes, we have to learn to love ourselves first, before expecting someone else to love us back. The process may take a while, but the fruits of our patience and our efforts can definitely reap great rewards. And unless we can say that we love ourselves, then we cannot say that we have truly loved someone else. And if the one we loved so much is really the one meant to be with us, then, in time, everything will fall into place.

Falling in love is not always a happy experience. Sometimes, it's enough that we are always there for the one we love, even if he needs us to be there because he wants to talk about a special girl, or he wants advice on how to patch things up with his girlfriend.

It's raining today, and I can't help but remember those days when I unofficially turned myself into his personal confidant. Unintentionally, I committed to always being there for him, to always making sure that I am available when he needs company, or when he asks me out.
